The new Porsche Macan, which should debut between the end of this year and the beginning of 2023, will only be powered by batteries: a big bet for the best seller of the German brand.
Farewell, lovers of V6 engines (and inline four cylinders), because the Porsche Macan is going to change course. We’ve announced this so many times that it almost seems untrue, a calamity somehow exorcised (for the petrolheads, of course). But here it is: the SUV of miracles, which arrived nine years ago to demonstrate to us that between the huge Cayenne and the super-sexy and immortal 911 there was room for a sporty crossover-SUV, it is indeed true. There are those who say that it arrives at the Geneva Motor Show, in March, but it could even come before that.
The new model was spotted in the last winter tests on the Scandinavian tracks, and will only run on battery – a somewhat crazy bet, since the Porsche Macan is not a simple niche car, like the Taycan (read here), but the best -indisputable seller of the German brand. We could have a lot of doubts before endorsing a landmark turn like this, but the latest market data could silence any discussion.Only the Dacia Spring the car that promises to democratize electric vehicles, has already sold more than all Porsches combined in Europe.Of course we are talking about another category, with different numbers, prices, expectations and ambitions, but the fact is that an electric car already sells more than Macan, Cayenne, Panamera, 718, 911 and Taycan combined.
And it is worth noting that the latter, in 2021 alone, already had 40,000 units licensed. In short: electric carsare making headway in Europe, and if the brand doesn’t invest in them now, when will it?The official presentation date is still unknown, but between “peeps” in the Arctic and now more reliable projections, the one you see here is almost exactly it: the electric Porsche Macan.
The EPP sports
The second generation of the German SUV, as we know, will be born on its own platform. But not totally alone.Because your PPE (Premium Platform Electric) will be in great company: the Audi A6 and Q6 e-tron, for starters, and, from 2025, a Bentley too.And it won’t be a leap in the dark from a technical point of view: the Macan can exploit the know-how of its cousins from Ingolstadt (and Wolfsburg), and will adopt an 800-volt electrical system like the Taycan, capable of supporting ultra-fast recharges of 350 kW (15 minutes to complete 80% battery). And, considering the DNA, it will have to reach these numbers guaranteeing absolute sportiness and driving pleasure (leaving the allure of high-tech luxury to the other brands).
Repeating the abbreviations of the combustion, S and Turbo version, the new Porsche Macan will have different battery options – the entry-level one with 60 to 70 kWh and the one with higher performance, somewhere around 100 kWh.As for traction, with a single electric motor, the “basic” versions will dump their horses in the rear, as is brand tradition, while the 4×4 scheme, without off-road ambitions, would be reserved for the top of the line, with two engines, one at the front and one at the rear. Autonomy will be between 350 and 500 kilometers, depending on the versions.
new front
It won’t be difficult to differentiate this new electric Porsche Macan from the current combustion models, which were restyled just over a year ago and should go on sale at least until 2024 (read more below). If the dimensions and silhouette of the new SUV are to remain more or less the same as the current ones, the front end and many other details will change profoundly. Our illustrations clearly show the solution used in the headlights, with four LED elements at the top for the daytime running lights, while direction indicators and headlamps increase in size: an aesthetic choice that harks back to the electric “big brother”, the Taycan.
